Family Travel with Colleen Kelly Visits The Lake

Now airing its second season, PBS syndicated show, "Family Travel with Colleen Kelly" is set to show off Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks in their third episode of the season.

Rewind 1 year ago to June, 2014; The Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau played host to Colleen, her two daughters and production crew. With a jam-packed, four day itinerary secured, the cast, crew and members of the CVB staff set out to give the cameras a complete Lake of the Ozarks experience focusing on family friendly activities.

From deep underground to hundreds of feet above the entire Lake, the cast and crew filmed our caves, parks, attractions, fishing, water sports, local dining experiences, shopping destinations and lodging facilities. From a Convention & Visitor Bureau perspective, it was fantastic to see newcomers enjoy what Lake of the Ozarks has to offer first hand. The cast and crew stated numerous times how impressed they were with our destination and how they couldn't wait to come back and experience a vacation here without having to "work". It also reminded us (at the CVB) that we often forget how much fun there is to be had right here in our back yard. With the year-round, daily tasks that go into promoting our destination, we sometimes lose track of how fortunate we are to live and work in an area that most people only visit in their free time - and for that reminder, we sincerely thank Colleen and her crew.

The Family Travel with Colleen Kelly episode is set to air on Chicago PBS affiliate WTTW Channel 11 at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 16th and on Springfield, MO PBS affiliate KOZK on Sunday May 17th at 8:30 am and Wednesday May 20th at 8:30 am. BROstock 2015 Set for May 27–30

Liquidforce's BROstock, the world's most prestigious professional wakeboarding event, returns to the Lake of the Ozarks with more high-flying, jaw-dropping on-the-water action, May 27-30, 2015.  Twenty-four of the world's elite wakeboarders will invade the Lake to compete for a prize pool worth over $30,000. Captain Ron's Bar and Grill in Sunrise Beach will be the host headquarters for the event. Admission to all BROstock events is free and the public is welcome to attend. BROstock officially kicks off on Wednesday, May 27 in Osage Beach with a meet and greet at Wake Effects marine dealership, followed by a barbecue at Performance Marine. On Thursday, the BROstock charity golf tournament tees off at noon at the Hidden Lakes course at Tan-Tar-A Resort followed by a 5 pm social hour at NautiFish Rum Bar in Camdenton. The heart-pumping, adrenaline-fueled fun begins on Friday, May 29 with the first round of the competition at Captain Ron's Pirates Cove at the 34.5 mile marker. From 2-7 pm, spectators in boats and floats will line the cove to watch the twenty-four competing wakeboarders push themselves to the limits. Following the first round, the general public is invited to attend a party at Captain Ron's where they can meet and mingle with the athletes. The 10 best riders from Friday's heat will compete again on Saturday, May 30 beginning at noon. Following this heat, at 2:30 pm, the final five competitors will go head-to-head to decide who will walk away with bragging rights and all the prizes. After the crowning of the 2015 BROstock champ, there will be a ten-year BROstock anniversary "blow out" party at Captain Ron's beginning at 6 pm. Memorial Weekend Celebrations at The Lake

Several resorts at the Lake of the Ozarks are celebrating the unofficial kick off of the summer travel season with stunning fireworks displays over Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-25.

Although June 21 is officially the first day of summer, Memorial Day Weekend has been the traditional start of the tourist season at the Lake, which gives many resorts, restaurants and local businesses plenty of reason to celebrate.

On Saturday evening, Bear Bottom Resort, in Sunrise Beach, will entertain visitors with live music from Money for Nothing beginning at 7 pm followed by a professional pyrotechnics display at 9:45 pm. The fun continues at Bear Bottom on Sunday with a live, double-bill concert featuring another performance by Money for Nothing from 7:00 - 9:30 pm, a second fireworks display at 9:45 pm and country music superstar Matt Stillwell will close out the evening with a much-anticipated performance beginning at 10 pm. On Sunday, two of the Lake's premier resorts are sure to bring "oohs" and "aahs" with their fireworks displays over the Lake. Tan-Tar-A Resort, located in Osage Beach, invites Lake visitors to view its fireworks display by water at the 26-mile marker. The Lodge of Four Seasons will host a grand opening of the newly redesigned cloverleaf swimming pool and poolside Parrot Bar throughout the holiday weekend and will also host a barbeque and carnival followed by fireworks on Sunday. Spring Harbor Hop at Lake of the Ozarks

Kick off the spring boating season at the Lake of the Ozarks - and win big prizes - during the 18th Annual Spring Harbor Hop poker run on Saturday, May 2.  Spring Harbor Hop participants will try to complete the best poker hand (or hands) by traveling by lake or by land to their choice of waterfront checkpoints across the Lake (there are over 40 businesses consisting primarily of bars, restaurants and marinas on the Hop). While all the stops for the event are boater friendly, participants also can enjoy the day and the scenery by land, driving from one location to the next. "The Spring Harbor Hop happens at a time when many flowers and trees around the Lake are in full bloom, so it's just gorgeous," CVB Director of Member Services Heather Brown says.  "Many people make a full day of it, as the event lets them enjoy the food and fun of the Lake, all while taking in our beautiful spring scenery. This year we're expecting as many as 1,400 people to come out to celebrate the beginning of the boating season." Players will begin their "hop" by making a suggested donation of $20 per hand and drawing their first card at any of the participating locations. Six additional cards will be drawn for each hand as participants visit the various Harbor Hop locations around the Lake. When the seventh card is drawn, the hand is complete and is turned in at that final location. An additional card to help improve the hand can be obtained at that final location for a $5 donation.  Prizes will be awarded for the top 10 poker hands at the Hop, as well as the four worst hands and 10 randomly selected winners. All eligible hands must be turned in by 7 p.m. Winners will be notified by certified mail. There also will be prizes for "section winners" who complete their entire hand in one of these four sections: Section I is the Gravois Arm of the Lake Section II includes Bagnell Dam to the 10 mile marker on the Main Channel Section III runs from the mile markers 13-26 on the Main Channel Section IV includes mile markers 31-38 on the Main Channel and Big Niangua Arm Most Harbor Hop locations open at 11 a.m., though some open as early as 9 a.m. Hours will vary from location to location, so "hoppers" should consult the list of locations and operating hours by visiting FunLake.com/HarborHop. St. Patrick's Day Festivities at The Lake

Saint Patrick’s Day at Lake of the Ozarks is kind of a big deal. Not only is it a day (and night) dedicated to fun parties and all things green, it heralds the return of Spring - a time when we can emerge from our sheltered winter existence and enjoy warm sunshine and our beautiful Lake landscape coming back to life.

Start your St. Paddy’s Day at Lake of the Ozarks with a unique parade experience - on the water! The Saint Patrick’s Parade on the Water will be held on March 14th, 2015 and is a fun day trip on the Lake and a perfect way to kick off the Spring boating season. A new route this year will start at Captain Ron’s in Sunrise Beach. An optional breakfast buffet at Captain Ron’s is available, beginning at 8 am. Boats depart and the parade officially begins at 10 am. There will be the cruise boat again this year with tickets available through the Lake West Chamber office for only $25.

The Water Parade route is as follows: Captain Ron’s (34.5 MM by water, LR 5-50 by land) to Bear Bottom (38 MM by water, LR 5-36 by land) to Bulldogs Beach House (33 MM by water, LR 5-65 by land) and then Larry’s on the Lake (31 MM by water, Pier 31 Road by land). The 31st Annual Lake of the Ozarks St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on March 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm on the historic Bagnell Dam Strip (Bagnell Dam Boulevard) in Lake Ozark, Missouri. The St. Patrick's Day Parade is Lake Ozark's longest running traditional parade and is guaranteed to bring out the Irish in you. Deck the whole family in green, grab the lawn chairs and head out to the Bagnell Dam Strip for an afternoon of family fun watching the various floats, cars, motorcycles and yes even boats as they make trip along the Strip. And who knows you might even score some candy! 

Do you or your group/organization have a boat, float, car, truck or motorcycle that you would like to enter  in the parade? You can download the official entry from and return it to the Bagnell Dam Strip Association no later than March 9, 2015. Whether they are Irish or not, visitors to the Lake of the Ozarks can get a head start on St. Patrick’s Day at The 5th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Short Bus Shuffle, to be held March 14 on the west (Hwy 5) side of Lake of the Ozarks. Ten restaurants and nightspots will offer live entertainment and St. Patrick’s Day food and drink specials. In addition, six West Side lodging establishments will provide special Short Bus Shuffle rates for participants who make reservations in advance. 

Shuttle buses will safely transport “shufflers” from location to location, beginning at 4 pm. A required $5 wristband grants entrance to any participating entertainment venue along the shuffle route and is also necessary to ride the shuttles. “The Lake of the Ozarks West Lake Chamber of Commerce’s goal for the Short Bus Shuffle is for participants to have a fun time and be transported safely when doing so,” Chamber Executive Director Deborah Buscher said. “We are currently selling wrist bands and they can be ordered directly from the Lake West Chamber of Commerce office.”

Many participants will be honoring the St. Patrick’s Day tradition of wearing green, including green souvenir shirts from the Short Bus Shuffle. Like the wrist bands, the shirts are available prior to the event at any participating location or the Lake of the Ozarks West Chamber of Commerce office.

2014 Holiday Events at Lake of the Ozarks

From the "gobble, gobble" of Thanksgiving to the "ho, ho, ho" of the Christmas season, Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks is the place to celebrate the holidays. For those who don't want to cook - but do want to eat - on Thanksgiving Day, a number of the Lake area's resorts and restaurants offer turkey and all the trimmings. Visitors can enjoy holiday lights throughout the Lake of the Ozarks area at several drive-through parks featuring lighting displays that encompass thousands of brightly burning bulbs. From November 17th to January 1st, the City of Laurie presents the Enchanted Village of Lights at the Laurie Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds' 27 acres will be filled with displays, from small ones to towering displays over 30 feet high.  Six new displays will be added this year and LED lights make them shine even brighter than ever.  The smiles on the faces of the visitors shine the brightest, however, as they enjoy this holiday tradition. "Even a Scrooge smiles when he comes here," says Laurie's Events and Parks Coordinator Susann Huff. The Enchanted Village of Lights opens each day at 5:00 pm. The park will stay open until at least 9:00 pm on weekdays and 10:00 pm on weekends. There is no charge to drive through the village, but any donations will be put to use in refurbishing and preserving the displays for the future. Also in Laurie, and opening Thanksgiving Day, The Festival of Lights at the Shrine of St. Patrick on Hwy. 5 is the oldest light park in the area. The site is also the home of the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church, so this display focuses on Jesus and His mother, Mary. The St. Patrick Festival of Lights will be open daily from 6:00–10:00 pm from Thanksgiving through January 1st. Lights shine brightly in the City of Versailles, as well, with the city park aglow for the Unity Circle of Lights.  Beginning November 26th and continuing through January 1st, the holiday light park will feature approximately 40 glowing and animated holiday scenes. The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year. The Lake's Osage Beach Premium Outlets mall offers extended hours and special savings on that day to make holiday gift-buying easier.  In addition, specialty shops around the area offer gifts for the home, unique clothing, jewelry and other personal items. Thanksgiving weekend offers family fun in Versailles, which hosts Olde Fashioned Christmas on the Square on Saturday, November 29th, from 5:00–8:00 pm.  Vendor booths will line the historic Courthouse Square and the Versailles Choir will sing on the courthouse steps. Santa will arrive on the Versailles Rural Fire Department's fire engine then adjourn to the Royal Theater. His lap will be ready for sitting and his ears ready to hear children's gift requests. Also on November 29th, Laurie's 13th annual Lighted Christmas Parade begins at 6:00 pm at Central Bank, traveling north on Hwy. 5 to the Laurie Mall. The music of the holiday season is featured each year as Main Street Music Hall in Osage Beach presents Christmas on Main Street. Holiday carols, gospel hymns, musical impersonations and comedy are all included in a great show offered by Thom and Sandy Gumm, along with their cast of talented singers and musicians. The show is offered on weekends beginning November 7th and continuing through December 21st. The Parade will be lead by the Maine Corp League Honor Guard with the Grand Marshall and all parade participants following them. Again this year, Santa will be available immediately after the Parade at the White House on Bagnell Dam Blvd. for pictures with the children. Christmas Stockings, will be handed out to all the children who stop to see him, and hot chocolate and cookies will be served to all waiting in line to see Santa! 2014 Holiday Lights at Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks shows off its natural beauty for photographers all year, but when it gets dressed up for the holidays, it offers glitz and sparkle that demand a close-up from visiting camera bugs.  Thousands of lights reflect the joy of the season off the Lake's quiet waters, adding an aquatic theme to the holidays.

Twinkling lights are the stars of the show at drive-through holiday light parks around the Lake area. 

   

In Laurie, the 21st Annual Enchanted Village of Lights turns the 27-acre Laurie Fairgrounds into a winter wonderland from November 21st to January 1st.  Some of the displays are massive - up to 30 feet tall and 30 feet wide - while others come to life through animation.  Many are being equipped with LED lights to shine brightly throughout the park.  None of them, however, shine as brightly as the eyes of the children who visit, according to Susann Huff, Laurie's events and parks coordinator.  "I just love to see the kids' eyes when they arrive," she said.  "They can't believe it. It's hard to take it all in." 

  

Work has already begun on preparing the spectacle for visitors, expected to top 16,000 people again this year. The Enchanted Village of Lights opens each day at 5 pm to 9 pm, staying open to 10 pm on the weekends. There is no charge to drive through the village, but any donations will be put to use in refurbishing and preserving the displays for the future. Also, just a mile down the road in Laurie is the Lake area's most enduring drive-through Christmas lights event - Saint Patrick's Festival of Lights, celebrating 31 years when the lights go on this Thanksgiving evening. The Shrine of St. Patrick on Hwy. 5 on the north side of Laurie also is the site of the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church, so this festival of lights focuses on Jesus and his mother, Mary. The drive-through festival will be open daily from 6 pm to 10 pm until January 1st. New for this year, the gift shop will be open during festival hours and volunteers will be serving hot chocolate and apple cider. The Festival of Lights is a free event, though donations are accepted.

  

Versailles joins the lighting celebration from November 27th through January 1st with its own Unity Circle of Lights, featuring 40 lighted holiday exhibits in the Versailles City Park, at the junction of Highways 5 and 52 in Morgan County. The Unity Circle of Lights, too, is offered free of charge to visitors.

Autumn Color at Lake of the Ozarks

It is mid-October and Autumn is beginning to show some color all across the Lake of the Ozarks area. Fall is the perfect season to enjoy our two Missouri State Parks, scenic boat rides and seasonal festivals. If you happen to live in the Lake Area or if you are thinking of making one last visit before the weather takes a turn, now is the time to get outdoors and enjoy the Lake.

Of course, the most common question that we get this time of year is, "When will the fall colors peak at the Lake?". The truth is, we aren't aware of a way to accurately predict the exact peak of foliage color. What we can tell you is that, traditionally, our trees look their best in the week leading up to Halloween. This time varies year to year and it looks to be slightly delayed for 2013; meaning that you may still see some colorful scenery into the first week of November. Be aware that once the peak hits, colors drop very quickly and we could begin to see bare branches within just a few days afterwards. All that said, you certainly will not be disappointed if you head to the Lake right now. Hiking trails and scenic overlooks are bustling with activity as our weather has been great for enjoying a long walk in the woods.

Lake of the Ozarks Still Open for Business

All that is great about fall in Missouri is ready and waiting for travelers at the Lake of the Ozarks. The three counties in the Lake area offer lodging options including family and fishing resorts, luxury resorts, condos and lake homes, bed and breakfasts and hotels and motels. Public and private campgrounds offer hundreds of sites, with options from primitive, no-frills tent sites to fully equipped RV sites. For those who enjoy rustic camping without pitching a tent, some campgrounds and parks offer rental options from cabins (including treehouse cabins) to yurts.

The fall season is one of the best times of the year to ensure outstanding fishing success at one of the country's best bass fishing lakes. Fishermen and fisherwomen can launch their boats at boat ramps in the state park, some resorts or campgrounds, rent a boat at an area marina or fish right from the docks. Bass tournaments on three October weekends offer the opportunity to win prizes for the biggest catch.

Visitors can complete their fall vacation with golfing on championship courses, shopping at the state's largest outlet mall and sampling a portion of the Lake's restaurants and nightlife. The 28th Annual Fall Harbor Hop

It's hard to believe that it is October already. Schools have been in session for almost 2 months and our summer vacations already seem like a distant memory. Boating traffic on the Lake has been getting slower by the day and cooler nights remind us that winter is not far away. But that doesn't mean that we're done having fun on the water quite yet. There is still plenty of warm days to get out to enjoy beautiful autumn colors and our changing landscape. Not to mention that most waterfront businesses are still open until the end of the month, some even into November. Then there is the annual Fall Harbor Hop, a day-long poker hop celebrating Autumn and the close of the boating season at the Lake. This year's event is set for Saturday, October 12th, 2013.

"What is the Harbor Hop?", you ask? It's just like a poker run, only without any racing between locations. "Hoppers" begin the day at any one of over 40 participating locations around the Lake. Poker hands (entries) are purchased for a $15 donation and the first card of 7 is drawn. From there, "hoppers" go by water or land to the next participating waterfront bar, restaurant or marina where the next card is drawn. After visiting and enjoying at least 7 locations, participants will have a complete poker hand. The completed hand is turned in at the checkpoint where the 7th card is drawn. To qualify, a hand must be turned in by 7:00 pm. Prizes for the 5 best hands are awarded as well as prizes for the worst 4 hands. Over on the other side of the Lake at Dog Days Bar & Grill, The Canine Cannonball went on for its 7th consecutive year. Presented by Dock Dogs, this event has become a popular start to summer for dog owners, lovers and spectators. People from all over the Midwest as well as local canine athletics enthusiasts bring their furry friends to Dog Days to see how far and high they can jump. The Offshore Super Series has finally made it's long anticipated return to Lake of the Ozarks with Lake Race 2013, an event that we hope will be the first annual in a long future tradition at Bagnell Dam. The inaugural Lake Race was a huge success with 20 of the fastest boats in the nation competing for cash prizes and bragging rights. Last but not least - Hot Summer Nights, a classic car, truck and motorcycle show combined with entertainment and family fun had it's second run of the season on the Historic Bagnell Dam Strip. This event gets bigger each year, and June's event was no exception.
